HOW CAN MY COMPANY BENEFIT
FROM THE ROAD TO WISDOM TRAINING?
|
Dr. Butler and his wife and business partner, Revé, have been conducting a
training program on the Enneagram personality theory, called The Road to
Wisdom, since 1995. The program has been conducted with corporate and
not-for-profit clients such as Goodyear Tire Corporate and District Managers;
DST Systems, Inc., a financial services company of 10,000+ employees; U.S.
Central Credit Union; The Central Exchange, a personal and professional growth
organization for women leaders; and Young Audiences, among others.
Why conduct The Road to Wisdom in your organization?
Simply put, The Road to Wisdom course brings meaning and fulfillment to
employees’ lives. Why is that important? Research has shown that
employees who are “engaged” with their work are more productive and receptive to
change. The Gallup organization says that 70% of employees in American
organizations are “disengaged”. According to Bill Dyke, a consultant and
trainer, “Gallup developed a list of twelve questions (now known throughout the
business world as ‘Q12’) that had a direct correlation with business success. .
. .for an organization that exhibited sustained profitability, increasing
revenues, high morale, low turnover and strong customer loyalty, you could
predict that their employees would score high on the Q12 surveys, which is in
fact what occurred and continues to occur.” The 12 questions all have to do
with employees finding meaning and “fulfillment” in their work.
Dyke says that “fulfilling work brings us into that realm where we feel that our
work satisfies us, brings us rich experiences, and enables us to feel that we
are developing our full potentialities.” The Road to Wisdom Enneagram
training helps employees identify their strengths related to their
behavior and how they see the world, and then apply those strengths to
individual and team efforts. When individuals are able to use their talents on a
daily basis, they are more fulfilled. Enneagram training also helps employees
develop their full potential by focusing on what they do best, which is much
more fulfilling than trying to be something they are not. (See the full article
by Dyke in Enneagram Monthly,
March 2008, pp. 16-18 entitled "The Quantum Enneagram Applied: The Need
for Change)
What Is The Content?
Wisdom about human behavior comes from an understanding of the nine distinct
Enneatypes and a personal search for one’s own “true” type. Dr. Butler and Revé
provide insight into the nuances of each of the nine types, and include
information about a type’s strengths and weaknesses, wants and needs, fears and
desires. Also provided is a description of what behaviors each type will exhibit
in a work setting. Not found in other models of human behavior is a
classification of behavioral traits based on a continuum from healthy behavior
through deterioration toward unhealthy behavior. The Butlers teach about this
continuum, providing characteristic traits for each type as the type regresses
from health to dis-ease. Understanding traits as they exist on a continuum
allows an individual to seek help for self and others before they reach a level
that makes “getting better” problematic. The study of each type contains
suggestions regarding those areas of one’s life that can be improved that would
facilitate significant growth in personal and professional performance.
A typical training program consists of eight hours of instruction in the nine
Enneatypes and four hours of reflection upon and application of the concepts
learned. Both the eight hour training and the four hour reflection/application
sessions can be broken down into time allotments that fit organization needs.
Participants in The Road to Wisdom training are given the opportunity to
take an assessment designed by Dr. Butler called Butler’s Enneagram Type
Assessment. Each participant receives a computer-generated graph that
depicts the degree to which the participant matches (or has adapted to) each of
the nine types. The participant can then compare his/her report with information
gained about each type during the training sessions. In addition, each
participant will receive a narrative report that describes the characteristic
traits of his or her highest score, along with handouts summarizing the content
of the training.
Participants, or the organization, also have the opportunity to purchase Dr.
Butler’s book The Road to Wisdom, which not only describes each of the
nine types in depth but also details the three skills needed to make lasting
change in one’s life.
Who Should Participate?
The Road to Wisdom is designed for anyone who desires to grow personally or
professionally, and it has been delivered in a variety of organizations and
settings. The following are examples:
- Executive management teams
- Managers, supervisors, team leaders
- Project management teams (whenever new teams are assembled)
- Work groups or teams at any level
- Cross-company teams
- Personal development programs
- Leadership training at any level in any type of organization
- Church leaders/groups
- Marriage enrichment programs
- MBA programs
The Benefits of The Road to Wisdom
In our Road to Wisdom training, the participant will learn and or
achieve:
- new insight and understanding of one’s own behavior and the behavior of
others—why individuals behave the way they do.
- a new awareness of how individuals perceive events (what they think they see
or hear) differently and how these perceptions are impacted by one’s own type.
- a greater understanding of how others’ interpretation of events (what they
tell themselves about what they think they see or hear) differs from one’s own.
- a new perspective on how differences in the perception and interpretation of
events lead to communication difficulties and misunderstandings.
- a greater awareness of one’s personal strengths and how they can be used for
the betterment of the organization.
- an increased awareness of one’s weaknesses or vulnerabilities and how one can
manage or compensate for one’s weaknesses or vulnerabilities.
- the ability to differentiate healthy from slipping and unhealthy behaviors
for each of the nine Enneatypes.
- an understanding of how defense (ego protective) mechanisms can stand in the
way of accepting feedback and gaining insight into one’s behavior.
- how developing one’s ability to accept feedback, observe and reflect on the
feedback received, and the ability to demonstrate tenacity or perseverance can
profoundly affect one’s ability to change.
Participants find that conflicts and disagreements are easier to prevent or
resolve as a result of The Road to Wisdom training due to the increased
understanding of themselves and others.
An additional benefit is that participants take the information they have
learned home to their families, and it is used to enhance family relationships.
Parents begin to understand and accept their children’s behavior rather than
trying to make their children like themselves. Spouses and significant others
begin to dialog about differences and open their eyes to different
interpretations of behavior. When people are happier at home, they are happier
at work, and they are more productive.
For testimonials from some of the organizations who have participated in The
Road To Wisdom, see the Testimonials link on the Home Page. We believe the
best testimonial is the fact that every organization that has offered the
training has chosen to continue offering the course to additional participants.
People start requesting the training because they have seen the impact the
training has had with participants.
